“Our kids don’t need to be fixed—they have the ability to be great. We just need to figure out their greatness,” says Chayna Short, founder of Women Overcoming Obstacles Together (W.O.O.T). She highlights the importance of a strong support network for children on the autism spectrum and their caregivers, empowering families to thrive beyond societal expectations.

The sense of trust mothers and children feel in Chayna Short’s presence is undeniable. Her warmth and dedication create a space where everyone feels welcomed. “I aspire to build a future where no obstacle is insurmountable, and where every mother and child can thrive and make a meaningful impact on their communities,” she shares, reflecting her mission to uplift and empower those around her.

W.O.O.T hosts events throughout the Syracuse community, welcoming anyone who wants to attend. “I wanted to make sure that we have a place where we can come to fellowship, and everybody is okay because there is no judgment,”Chayna explains, emphasizing her commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive space for all.

W.O.O.T board members Monique, Erin, and Alysia play a vital role in supporting Chayna’s mission to better the community. As the organization has grown, Chayna has leaned on the help of her friends and other women who share similar experiences, demonstrating the power of collaboration and shared purpose.

Erin, a dedicated W.O.O.T board member, shares Chayna’s motivation to uplift the community. She is passionate about seeing the youth of Syracuse thrive while ensuring their mothers and caregivers feel supported every step of the way.

Chayna’s connections through W.O.O.T have inspired her to become involved in other organizations that support children and parents in Syracuse. One such initiative is the Police Athletic League (PAL), run in Syracuse by Jimmy Oliver, where Chayna remains an active presence in the community.

The Syracuse Police Athletic League (PAL) aims to bring youth and law enforcement together to foster positive relationships within the community. As the Assistant Director of Community Engagement for PAL, Chayna plays an active role in organizing opportunities that help children in the community learn, grow, and thrive.

Jimmy Oliver, Community Engagement Director for the Syracuse Police Department, is a close friend of Chayna’s. “Our kids need to see folks like Chayna, and I am very intentional about who I allow to come in the presence of our kids and our families because we don’t take that for granted,” he says, highlighting the deep trust and respect he has for Chayna’s work and impact on the community.

Outside of W.O.O.T, Chayna continues to support the community in every way she can. Jimmy Oliver values her work both within the organization and beyond, stating, “We make sure our kids have the best because our kids deserve that.” This reflects Chayna’s unwavering commitment to providing opportunities and support for the youth in her community.
